Engaging the Student Community through "Novels to Netflix"

At the library, we want to provide more avenues for students to connect with each other and form communities where they can engage with the ideas they are learning in their courses outside of the classroom. Our Giving Day campaign is designed to meet this need–we are fundraising for a student outreach program that we have titled, “Novels to Netflix.” This program is a modified book club in which students read a book, then watch that book’s film adaptation together. Throughout the semester, our Instruction and Outreach Librarian will meet with the students during Spalding’s lunch period to facilitate discussions of the material over lunches provided by the library. “Novels to Netflix” seeks to engage students’ interests while also building community and strengthening students’ media literacy skills. Donations for this program go toward purchasing books and lunches for students. A $50 donation sponsors one student through this book club. Our goal is $750 as we would like 15 students to be a part of this program. Any surplus amounts raised will go toward future iterations of the program.
